It is a orange-pink to pinkish-red grape which is used for making white wines. The fruit is aromatic and savory. The wine produced from Gewurztraminer is high in natural sugar and typically dry and pale. Both the grapes and the wine are celebrated for their potent floral aroma, which resembles roses or passion fruit.
Gewurztraminer is found throughout the Old World in Italy, France, Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, and other countries. In the New World, it has found its greatest success in New Zealand and the southern tip of Chile. The history of this grape family, however, is scattered all over Europe and tangled in with the various wars and territorial changes through the centuries, such that it is unclear whether several varieties of Traminer are distinct varieties, mutations of a single variety, or even the same variety with differences only reflected in the terroir.
No doubt remains that it is a very unique wine filled with a character all its own. When produced with care and attention to detail, it creates a wine that is excellent for pairing with Asian and Indian cuisine, which is a very rare characteristic for a wine. It is also possible that its high sugar content will satisfy even the sweet tooth of Americans, and thus rival
Zinfandel .
