It is a dark black grape, with a dull, leaden color, producing a dark red wine comparable to a Cabernet Sauvignon , with a strong flavor and full body. The range of flavors, however, defy description. Numerous reports of characteristics, under-tastes, and aromas exist, comparing it to berries, plums, peppers, chocolate, espresso, and truffles. Some of this is due to varieties in winemakers' practices, however the grapes themselves tend to have very complex flavors that only come out in fermenting and aging. Stories of Shiraz' origin are as checkered as its flavor palette, with legends of travelers both to and from France, Christian Crusades, and Middle Eastern nations such as Iran figuring into them. The myths and history are so intertwined that we may never know. Shiraz the grape is suited well to warmer climates, and has thus earned immense popularity in Australia, where it is the most popular red wine grape. In France, it is known as Syrah and has less of a following; it is grown throughout the Rhône valley, and is a key component to many blends.
