Port wine is the distilled wine made in the Douro Valley in the northern provinces of Portugal.
Like Champagne, international treaties and laws limit what can be labeled 'Port', so any beverage sold as Port is the actual Portuguese fortified wine. Usually it is like a sweet red wine, but also comes in red and dry varieties as well, including the most famous 'tawny port'. The wine is fortified with brandy, resulting in a rich, sweet concoction with a heavy body and alcohol content of around 20%. Port is named after the seaport city of Porto.
An amazing array of over one hundred varieties of grapes may be used in producing port, making it the case of a truly blended wine. The five most common grape varieties are Tinta Barroca, Tinta Cao, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Francesa, and Touriga Nacional. The different styles of Port may be barrel-aged or aged in a sealed bottle. They may range in color from light brown to white to red.
Port is highly prized for its ability to age. The combination of vintage years, which only occur two percent of the time and must be declared by a governing body, and extensive age lead to Port wines that can be aged anywhere from ten to thirty years. Some of these can get quite expensive, and collectors sometimes keep bottles as treasured heirlooms, reserved only for the most special occasions. |
