Muscat grapes are one of the oldest domesticated grape varieties, and grow in just about every colour you can imagine. They are cultivated in every wine-producing country in the world, and are used not just for wine but for producing table grapes and raisins as well. University of Pennsylvania scientists once found traces of Muscat grape residue on vessels found in the burial mound of King Midas of Pessinus of Phrygia. Moscato is a dessert wine made from late-harvest Muscat grapes. Muscat grapes, in addition to having high amounts of sugar, also have a rich floral aroma similar to Gewurztraminer . Muscat grapes are used in virtually every branch of dessert wines , from fortified wines to sherries to brandies to ice wines to noble rot wines. In Portugal and Spain it is known as 'Moscatel' or 'Muscatel'. There is also a Madeira version of Muscato. And Muscat, by that name exactly, is also produced in France under several variations.
