French Champagne is the sparkling wine produced specifically in the Champagne region of Northeast France. Read more
The reputation of this region and the famous beverage produced is so cherished in French culture that they have passed laws and treaties forbidding the generic use of the name ' Champagne ' to apply to sparkling wine produced anywhere else. Throughout the history of French Champagne , it has been associated with royalty and nobility. This was because the expense of producing it made it prohibitive for all but the upper classes to afford. However, modern times have lowered the bar significantly, and it is now the traditional drink of celebration. One may hardly consider a New Year's Eve party, a wedding reception, or the launching of a ship complete without this intoxicating, bubbly treat. The three grape varieties allowed in French Champagne are Chardonnay, Pinot Noir , or Pinot Meunier. Most Champagne is a blend of several vintages of grapes, since the conditions and seasonal variations are evened out in this process. Four variations of French Champagne exist: The Prestige Cuvée is the highest quality from vintage years, the Blanc de Noirs is white wine produced exclusively from black grapes, the Blanc de Blancs is white wine from white grapes, and the Rosé is a red wine produced from a mixture of grapes.
